Tobi's new music monster

Adversary One VideoArtist: On Video
Track: “Adversary”
East London-based four-piece On Video deliver a raucous dose of well-worked garage guitar pop with new single, “Adversary”.

Out of the electro noise and the feedback fizz, an ‘oh so tasty’, and ‘oh so nasty’ guitar riff rips open in arpeggio; kick ‘n’ snare arrive, with tight punch and swagger. The 2-minute 40-second track alive with Clash infused strut and attitude. Electric six strings are worked in percussive dab and palm-mute; burst of blunt metallic crank, and driving blaze of distortion and glorious noise. The bass catching the groove in a well-judged mixture of sustain, rapid run, and mute.

Vocals are delivered in a rush and on the hustle; changing up from tight percussive stabs through the verses to soaring salvos of indie-sing-along melodies; voice and instruments building as one to lift the track sky high. Spoken, sung, and chant mixed up to great and compelling effect.

A barn-storming slice of pub-gig and summer festival indie-rock; confident and upbeat, a soundtrack for taking on the world, shooting the breeze, blowing it off, and giving all you’ve got.

“Adversary” is out now on all major streaming platforms.

If I Needed Someone by Firemaid + Lake Cube - BRASH! Magazine BlogArtist: Firemaid + Lake Cube
Track: “If I Needed Someone”
San Fransico-based Firemaid and Lake Cube conjure a dreamy rendition of George Harrison’s “If I Needed Someone”.

Driven from the back by gloriously dense bassline, the 2-minute 59-second track shifts and shimmers in ethereal layers of lush ambient and cosmic sustain; the inspired instrumentation free to explode and explore in imaginative riff and stanza, liberated in creative orbit of the thick, pulsating bassline. Grungy synth sat double above the bass and in compelling contrast to percussive acoustic guitar and twisting electric six-string arpeggio.

Vocals expand in the vast landscapes of harmony and double, delay and reverb; lyrics flowing in long passages of graceful language. Word and melody more intoxicating and mythical than the Fab Four’s original. The spirit and soul inferred and implied in the 1965 release, opened up and allowed to blossom and breathe.

Both faithful homage to the ‘Rubber Soul’ original, and re-invention in its own right, Firemaid and Lake Cube have crafted a track of sublime musicality; wondrously trippy and organic in form and arrangement, uniquely beautiful and evoking a quiet sense of boundless creative possibilities.

“If I Needed Someone” is out now on all major streaming platforms.

As they Do by Fade Awaaays - BRASH! Magazine BlogArtist: Fade Awaaays
Track: “As They Do”
Toronto-based Garage rock band Fade Awaays drop an upbeat update for your summer mixtape with new single, “As They Do”.

Born of the club scene, the festival circuit, and relentless gigging, the 3-minute 9-second track drives from the drums, from beginning to end; snare and tom tumbling down in riotous cascade and percussive thunder, kick punching light and tight. As cymbals fizz left/right in hyped-excited ambient, electric six-strings rain down; delayed and modulated, textured and toned in glorious saturation, the guitars burst, smack, and explode in fuzzed overdrive, shimmering chorus, and soaring, tortured distortion. The bass dancing in rapid-fire dabs of low frequency and sleight of hand.

Vocals slung with attitude and swagger; standing tall and standing out, daring you and compelling you to sing along; well-worked and confident application of tape slap and reverb, adding size and depth. Voice and guitar playing off each other, the song rocking back and forth between ego, player, and performance.

With echos of Oasis and The Jam, Fade Awaays demonstrate the great potential of their accomplished songwriting, arrangement, and production. A band with the building blocks for a bigger stage and a much wider audience. One to watch.

“As They Do” is out now on all major platforms.
