International Songwriting Competition (ISC) Announces 2018 Winners

R.LUM.R and Super Duper Win Grand Prize For The Song “Frustrated

Judges Include: Adam Lambert, Nicky Jam, Tom Waits, Portugal. The Man, Krewella, Rakim, Kristian Bush (Sugarland), Rodney Crowell, and More

International Songwriting Competition (ISC)
The International Songwriting Competition (ISC), widely recognized as the most prestigious and respected songwriting competition in the world, is pleased to announce its 2018 winners. Created in 2002, ISC received almost 19,000 entries this year from almost 140 countries. Prizes include more than $175,000 in cash and merchandise.

For the first time in the competition’s 18-year history, the Grand Prize is awarded to an R&B song – as well as to artist/songwriters from Nashville, TN. It is with great pleasure that ISC bestows its highest honor to R&B artist Reginald Lamar Williams Jr., (aka R.LUM.R) and artist/producer Josh Hawkins (aka Super Duper) for their co-written song “Frustrated.” The Grand Prize includes $25,000 (USD) cash and over $30,000 in merchandise and services.

With R&B being such a dominant force in today’s music landscape, it is exciting that an R&B song is the Grand Prize winner for the first time in ISC. We are thrilled to acknowledge R.LUM.R and Super Duper, two artists who exemplify the present and the future of songwriting in this genre.  – Candace Avery, ISC Founder and Director

Having amassed more than 48 million streams on Spotify, the Grand Prize-winning song, “Frustrated” was written at a time when R.LUM.R had some big decisions to make. He was contemplating moving from Florida to Nashville to pursue his music, and the uncertainty he felt during his relocation became the inspiration for his breakout single “Frustrated.” He did end up moving to Nashville, and it has paid off for this incredibly talented singer and writer. Easily recognizable for his sultry, soulful vocals and effortless falsetto, R.LUM.R has performed the single on Jimmy Kimmel Live and has been praised by media such as NPR Music,The New York TimesVibeBillboard and Rolling Stone (who called him “an artist you need to know”).

The co-writer and producer of the winning song is Super Duper, an up-and-coming electronic artist/producer. Touring with the likes of The Chainsmokers, The Glitch Mob and Big Wild, Super Duper spent the past year bringing his cinematic productions on tour with Petit Biscuit and Kasbo with festivals lined up such as Electric Forest. After writing and producing for others, Super Duper began to release music under his own moniker. One of the first singles “Angela” hit #1 on Hype Machine and entered Spotify’s Viral 50 charts before being picked up by SiriusXM Chill. He also recently received a Clio award for scoring the trailer to Steve McQueen’s new motion picture Widows.

“Winning the Grand Prize in ISC is a huge honor for me, especially when you consider how many incredible writers entered,” says R.LUM.R. “I wrote “Frustrated” at a time when I was privately going through some very personal things that I honestly wasn’t sure anyone would understand, so it’s amazing to think the song would be honored in such a big way.“

In addition to the Grand Prize winner, many other deserving songwriters also share in the prestige and kudos of winning their respective categories in ISC. These winners hail from all over the world (50% of this year’s winners come from outside the USA) and represent diverse cultures while ranging from talented amateurs to seasoned songwriting veterans. The 23 categories include all genres of contemporary music, from Rock to Pop to Jazz to Country to Hip-Hop, and more.

Winning ISC is a distinction that has propelled many artists to achieve greater success. Previous winners have included: Illenium; Vance Joy; Bastille; Gotye; Lindsey Stirling; Kimbra; The Band Perry; Kehlani; Gregory Porter; Passenger; Lupe Fiasco; Gin Wigmore; Missy Higgins; For King and Country; and many more.

ISC is sponsored by: Art & Lutherie By Godin Guitars; Berklee College of Music; Celebrity Access; Eventric; Gig Salad; Lurssen Mastering; Merch Cat; Musician Wellness; Musicians Institute; oneRPM; PreSonus; Pro Tour Nutrition; Shubb Capos; SongU; Sweetwater; The Tracking Room; Tunedly; Vocal Eze; and Westone.

Canadian Rock Band, Across the Board at Indie Music Channel Awards

Jacqueline Auguste and Andy Ramjattan of Across The Board

Across The Board took home three awards for work on their album Sonic Boom including “Best Rock Band”, “Best New Band” and “Best Rock Video” for their song “No Curtain Call”, produced by MC2 Music Media in Toronto.

We had such an incredible time in Los Angeles networking with other independent musicians and attending the Indie Artist Summit. From a composer who took a rock band, choir and full orchestra and created an epic orchestral album, to a 16 year old pop sensation, to an alternative rocker from India, and an incredible classical producer, who created a collaboration across genres, (there was) such amazing talent in this group of award-recipients. – Jacqueline Auguste

The “Indie Music Channel” awards is an annual event, held in Los Angeles, and judged by a panel of experts from across the industry–production & engineering, artist management, mainstream radio and television, and grammy-winning artists and producers.

About Across The Board
Across The Board (ATB) is an award-winning Canadian rock band from Toronto and recipient of the Indie Music Hall of Fame award for hitting #4 on the mainstream iTunes Rock Charts Sept 10, 2018 for their 2018 album Sonic Boom. ATB hit the charts running with their newest album Wild Ones, debuting at #21 days after release. Having won “Best Rock Song 2018” for the Radio Music Awards, and being nominated for a 2018 Covenant Award for Best Rock Album, Across The Board gas been making musical waves nationally and globally. Formed in 2013, ATB quickly gained popularity with their YouTube cover series “Pick Up and Play” – now with over 600 videos on Youtube—imprinting their unique and innovative musical style and videography on both contemporary and classic rock songs while featuring other local artists as guests. Across The Board received airplay on terrestrial FM and College radio throughout the globe for their last four albums and recently released their fifth studio album Wild Ones March 15, 2019 to a packed house at Toronto’s iconic Opera House.

With a rapidly growing and solid social media footprint across the platforms, and a busy local touring schedule, Across The Board is a hard-working, unrelentingly creative force on the Canadian music scene and making marks globally online – selling out shows in and around Toronto, and continuously putting out quality audio and video content. ATB also collaborates regularly with other local and national musicians on projects such as “Indigal”- the Canadian Independent Female Artist Collective, “She’s Listening” in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada, and other local collaborations on the vibrant Canadian indie music scene.

Such a Lady! | “Ladylike” by Stevie Rae Stephens

Pop singer/songwriter and former American Idol powerhouse Stevie Rae Stephens recently released her newest single, “Ladylike”

Ladylike by Stevie Rae Stephens

Nashville, TN – With strong lyrics like It’s time we learned how to fight, ’cause lines are blurred and our voices go unheard, I take no pride, ’cause fighting like a lady means fighting for my life, “Ladylike” is sure to become an empowering anthem among Stevie Rae fans.

“The concept of being ladylike is a societal construct that conditions women to be fragile, polite, and restrained,” Stevie Rae explains. “We are taught as children to use our words, avoid conflict, and that commanding, outspoken character traits are less desirable – less ladylike. So what happens when ‘No’ isn’t enough? When our words don’t work? When a lifetime of being ladylike leaves us unprepared to fight back? We have been patient and polite in the face of disrespect long enough. It’s time to reclaim this word and encourage women to be powerful, fierce, and confident.”

“Ladylike” is the second of four singles Stevie Rae will be releasing, preceding three EPs, Ladylike, Daydreams and Cruel Love. These will ultimately make up her upcoming album, Ladylike set to be released in Fall 2019.

Inspired by pop icons like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Sara Bareilles, Stevie Rae also has deep roots in theater and composition. She is currently directing a production of The Vagina Monologues, which will take place on February 17 & 18 at Nashville’s famous Exit/In. Tickets can be purchased HERE.
