Book of Broken Romances | “All This Time” by Van Bellman

Indie-Rock Talent, Van Bellman Releases Third Single “All This Time”

All This Time by Van BellmanIf Sufjan Stevens was on a Beatles kick and stumbled upon a lost track from Beck’s Sea Change, it may sound like “All This Time,” a handful of broken romances distilled into one story. Boy wants girl, but plays it cool. She feels rejected and moves on. Boy comes crawling back, and she wants nothing to do with him. Rinse and repeat. The dogged heart defies the brain, again and again. After all this time I still spend all this time on you. It’s only fitting to release this yearning love song during the week of Valentine’s Day.

“All This Time” is Available Now on iTunes & Spotify!

indie rock artist, van bellmanAbout Van Bellman
Before starting Van Bellman last year, singer/guitarist Zac Taylor was writing and producing songs with other bands and artists. “I initially wrote ‘All This Time’ for Connell Cruise, who was label mates with my other band American Authors on Island Records a couple years ago, but has since moved back to South Africa where he just won Dancing With the Stars. But I always loved this song and I didn’t want it to fall through the cracks.”

“I’m mainly a guitarist but I love writing on piano because I can come across some happy accidents. That’s where the piano riff came from: a toy piano gathering dust in the corner of Mission Sound studio with one broken key, which you can hear in the track if you listen closely. I composed the string section digitally and had my friends Marie Kim (currently playing keys for Mitski) and Andy Baldwin (acclaimed mixing engineer for Björk, Cat Power, St Lucia, yours truly) replace it with actual cello and violin, which is truly a sonic treat in today’s digital age.”

The first three Van Bellman releases are all a bit different from each other. Sirius XM’s AltNation debuted the first single “I Hate To See You This Way,” a “bluesy rock and indie pop track that hits you hard from the second it starts and never seems to lose its momentum” (Live Nation’s Ones to Watch). “Gold & Blue” is “more of a pop anthem than the darkly ambient first single” (Billboard). “All This Time” is a forlorn love song with more orchestral elements and straightforward storyline.

Van Bellman has hit the ground running since its inception less than a year ago and shows no signs of slowing down.

Love Stallion recently released their latest video in time for their favorite holiday, Valentine’s Day. “Valentine” was produced by Arcadian Pictures, the same team behind the “Big Rock Radio” video.

“It was an absolute pleasure working again with John Hunt of Arcadian Pictures,” said Love Stallion frontman, Aaron Hart. “Our favorite part was the filming the black light party body-painting flashback scene! We filmed this at my condo in Denver, where a pair of Sexy Disco Legs hang above a big white plush area rug in the great room, surrounded in black light. Our tour company, Full Color Productions brought in 16 additional lighting fixtures to help set the mood, completely washing the room in black light and lasers. We had a bunch of friends out that night, along with DJs spinning house music (one of which was John, aka Panamaa). It was a total blast! Unfortunately, for our guests and my rug, the “washable” body paint didn’t turn out to be washable, ha!”

Sanctuary by Dusk
In honor of the upcoming Kingdom Hearts III video game release, Los Angeles-based alt-rock band Dusk pays homage to the video game series with their single release of “Sanctuary”, a unique take on the ethereal masterpiece by Japanese-American singer, Utada Hikaru.

“Sanctuary” is the perfect marriage between the band’s strong attachment to the introspective themes surrounding the video game series and their own musical and thematic sensibilities influenced by the franchise’s original soundtrack. Dusk takes a different approach to this heartful cover through their exploration of avant-garde instruments and a more alternative sound.

“Sanctuary” is Available Now on all Digital Music Streaming Outlets!

We make a conscious effort to create a soundscape that portrays the fictional world that’s unfolding within our music. In our live show, we incorporate several instruments not commonly found in rock bands, such as bass synthesizers and theremin. – Aaron Rudin (drummer)

Lessons From Kingdom Hearts
Beyond the music, Dusk admits the Kingdom Hearts video game series has largely influenced each band member’s life in significant ways.

  • Lesson 1 Everybody is somebody, and nobody is a nobody.
  • Lesson 2 Create your own future in the present. It is not defined by your past.
  • Lesson 3 We are all a part of each other. Love and trust is the strongest weapon of all.

About Dusk
Dusk is an alt-rock band from Los Angeles, CA formed in 2018. The band’s music is connected through a narrative story which explores themes of utopia, morality, and control.

Their unique atmospheric but heavy spin on the classic alt-rock sound tells the narrative of an expansive story in which the characters’ actions and motivations often lie in a grey area between light and dark – this is the significance of the name, Dusk.

Open the Pages to a Love Story | Quiet Fall Album by Ryan Gibeau

Pop/Rock Artist, Ryan Gibeau, Releases Debut Album, Quiet Fall

Quiet Fall by Ryan Gibeau Ryan Gibeau’s debut album entitled Quiet Fall is an eclectic journey through style and mood, narrating a love story from start to finish. With essences of pop and alternative rock, the use of strings brings a unique flavor to the tracks. Thematically the album is about seeing the change you need, taking care of yourself and leaving behind what isn’t right for you. Sometimes we turn life against ourselves, play victim and it stops us from inspiring others. Quiet Fall is about empowering yourself, seeing that change is necessary and getting back up. Written as an immersive and meaningful album designed to inspire others to be your best self, Gibeau reveals “The album was inspired by a relationship kept together by two people suffering from emotional addiction, what it takes to leave and how to get back on your own feet”.

Leading single “Flying Away” was written whilst flying to Los Angeles to leave behind an unhealthy on-again/off-again relationship. The act of finally and physically leaving allowed the lyrics and chords to almost fall out of Gibeau, essentially sonically journaling his experiences and emotions. “Flying Away” highlights the songwriters signature style of beautiful string arrangements, organic instrumentation and raw vocals that tug on your heart strings.

“Room Gets Hotter” features twangy guitars, smokey vocals and a throbbing bassline. Gibeau reveals, “The theme of my music centres around the concept of love. Often the music subconsciously surfaces and the songs write themselves. I love the exploration and discovery in my songwriting”.

Quiet Fall is Available Now on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon!

Indie Rock Band, Your Favorite Enemies, Partners with Sony Music Entertainment

YFE and Sony Music Entertainment - BRASH! Magazine Blog

Alternative Rock Band, Your Favorite Enemies announced news that any hardworking indie hopes for. They are now partners with music machine Sony Music Entertainment. The band gave the exclusive this week via Facebook:

I’m very proud to announce that Your Favorite Enemies (YFE) and I are now partnering with Sony Music Entertainment!

Being a fierce DIY and independent artist, I was looking for partners who would not only understand the modern reality of the music business we’ve been involved in for the last decade but who would be first and foremost crazy music fans. That’s what I found in the people at Sony Music; not a prestigious logo, but real music and art lovers. I’m utterly excited for the present and future of the band and my different artistic ventures, as that new partnership will allow our unconventional and uncommercial perspective and creative endeavors to resonate in new places, and will also pave the way for others artists to define new means of uncompromisingly being… and that’s a very good news!

We hope other major music companies catch on to this and open more doors for indie artists! More details are to come from the band and this new music partnership! For more details, subscribe to YFE newsletter to be the FIRST to know!

New York City’s A Very Special Episode | Cut for Time EP Release

NYC’s Post-Punk/Shoegaze Outfit, A Very Special Episode Release Cut for Time EP

Cut for Time EP by A Very Special Episode - BRASH! Magazine BlogNew York City – NYC’s post-punk/shoegaze outfit A Very Special Episode, recently released their sophomore EP Cut for Time. Drawing listeners in with powerful female-fronted vocals, the band defies genre boundaries, blending elements of post-punk, noise rock, and alternative rock, to ethereal shoe-gaze tones all with a hint of glam-pop attitude. The release comes as their first under Knuckle Down Records, whom the band signed with earlier this spring. Cut for Time is out everywhere today and available in physical vinyl and CD format.

The new release marks a strong surge of growth for the band, as they have shifted to a much more aggressive and fast-paced tempo across the board, while elements of their intimate and atmospheric roots still are found in layered melodies and intricate guitar work. Rebel Noise, who premiered the EP, described them as “seriously dynamic and vivid” with Kasey Heisler’s vocals taking a lead, being “clear and sweet-tart in tone, but she belts it out with punk spirit.”

The band shared, “The goal of the EP was to create definitive versions of several of our songs that started as bedroom demos along with a couple new ones. ‘Gravity’ and ‘Still Here’ mostly remained the same with a faster tempo and higher production quality. ‘Crazy’ was radically transformed from a slow ballad to a as-fast-as-we-can punk track. ‘On Our Own Again’, if not obvious from the title, was a bottom up reimagining of Censored Dreams’ ‘On Our Own’ that ended up being completely its own thing. ‘Invitation to Delete’ is then our most pure new song that was created as a cathartic response to toxic social and political discourse online.” Blurring the lines between genres, A Very Special Episode are well on their way to honing a brightly dynamic and original sound that will appeal to a variety of listeners.

The band recently released their first official music video for their track “Gravity”. They shared, “’Gravity’ is one of the oldest songs we’ve ever written and inspired by Stranger Things.” The video, which was directed and shot by Emma Shalaway, plays with the duality of parallel universes and recollection, bringing the tracks lyrics to life. Heavily inspired by television and pop culture, the band embraces these influences in much of their music.

Cut for Time was produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Brandon Bujnowski at If and Only If Productions. It is available digitally everywhere today including Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music. Fans can order physical formats on CD and vinyl through Bandcamp, or Knuckle Down Records. The band will celebrate with an EP release show on September 8 at Gutter Bar (200 N 14th St, Brooklyn, NY) with The Rizzos, But Pyrite, and The Loneliers.

A Very Special Episode - BRASH! Magazine BlogAbout A Very Special Episode
New York City’s A Very Special Episode has a unique and atmospheric soundscape, concocted from ethereal shoegaze melodies, blended with the grit and attitude of post-punk, and finished with the energy and intensity of pop hooks. Powerful yet intimate, their music digs into your core, enveloping and cathartic to swallow all of your worries of the modern age.

Originally formed in 2016, the band has undergone a number of line-up changes and worked to develop their sound, all consistently led with the dynamic and enthralling vocals of Kasey Heisler and melodic guitar-work of Patrick Porter. Much of the band’s debut 2017 release Censored Dreams (EP) came together from home recordings, written over the course of several years. Pulling influences and inspiration from a variety of sources, the band cites television and sitcoms as a key influence to their identity. The band name, “A Very Special Episode” is trope for specific sitcom episodes that discuss heavy topics (relative to the content of network sitcoms). Embracing their modern roots, lyrical content is further inspired by the deluge of personal relationships, day jobs, and internet drama.

A Very Special Episode signed to Knuckle Down Records in April of 2018. Their sophomore EP Cut for Time was released August 31, 2018 and recorded by Brandon Bujnowski of If and Only If Productions.
