what i want music video by alexa ferr

When Adot The God emailed me the beat for what you hear on “What I Want”, I was playing around with melodies and on this particular day, I was feeling like I needed to go after what I want. That, if I’m not happy at the place I’m at now, I need to do what’s best for me to make myself happy and create the life I want for myself. “What I Want” is about empowering others to go after what they believe they deserve and what they want in life. This can be in the form of a better relationship, way of living, career, etc.

Music News: Ava Heatley reflects on anxiety with emotive new single “Party”

Soulful Pop Singer-Songwriter, Ava Heatley, Shares Emotive & Reflective Single “Party”

Raw and beautifully honest single provides a reflective discussion

Party by Ava HeatleyNew York City – Singer-songwriter Ava Heatley shares an emotive new single titled “Party” . An immersive and reflective track opens up about her struggle with anxiety. Raw and beautifully honest, she blends soulful pop and layered harmonies, for a moving and relatable experience.

In the track, Heatley describes being alone and unhappy at a party, confessing her desire to slip away and go home. It’s a window into the emotions of those who suffer anxiety while remaining relatable for all. Heatley shared, “‘Party’ is about my struggle with anxiety. Lyrically, it describes feeling uncomfortable in your own skin but I also wanted this song to sound like how a panic attack feels by using airy guitars, monotonous piano and a doubled vocal that surrounds the listener. I asked a bunch of friends to record themselves talking for this track and laid it as a bottom layer at the end of the track to help add to the overwhelming chaos the song erupts into.”

She wrote the track after experiencing a panic attack while attending a friend’s party, with no direct reason or trigger. “I was really interested in the dichotomy of being at a party where you are supposed to be relaxed and having fun, countered by the overwhelming uncomfortable feeling that anxiety brings when it pops up,” Heatley reflected. “Even though this song is set at a party I wanted to include elements in the verses that could be applied to any situation where anxiety can set it – and for me that could be literally anywhere.”

Heatley recorded the track with her friend and producer Ben Durland. The single follows her previous track “Shitty Tattoo” released this past summer with an accompanying music video and 2018 EP Beautiful/Terrifying. Much of Heatley’s material comes as cathartic and self-reflective, but easily accessible and relatable for all to connect with; she doesn’t shy from sharing a laugh or confessing a cry.

Dedicated to Summer | “Cream” by Jett Kwong

Experimental Pop Artist Jett Kwong, Releases New Single, “Cream”

Cream by Jett Kwong

New single “Cream” is an ode to summer, a time passed, to lusting over someone and ultimately lusting over an idealized version of a persona and the past.

I was inspired by the realization that we all, including myself, fall prey to the romanticization of history, and the exoticism of Asia and Asian people. This to me is a legacy of colonialism, and that lens is particularly interesting when I apply them to my own family’s stories of surviving war, flourishing in post WWII Hong Kong, and immigrating to the US. – Jett Kwong

“Cream” evokes the balmy imagery of Kwong’s grandparents strolling down the road in 1940’s Hong Kong in their beautiful, tailored clothes – in stark contrast to the reality of their inequality in a British colony and their everyday struggles to survive and ultimately immigrate. Sonically the single features ethereal vocals, shimmering soundscapes and hints of Kwong’s Chinese influences.

About Jett Kwong
Jett’s work is colored by themes such as family, her identity as a mixed heritage woman, and the complexities of colonial history. “Our identities are colored by the context in which we are in – the way we grow up, our appearance, and our basic interests and beliefs”. It is through this belief that she channels her desire to seek out the true roots of individuality.

Sonically influenced by a variety of sounds from different eras, Jett’s music is built from pieces of the past with an essence of the future. With the desire to spark conversations about identity, the singer/songwriter confides, “I am inspired to tell not only my and my family’s histories, but a broader story of culture – to be a conduit for those stories and to find more innovative ways to express them.”

Empowered by issues surrounding women’s rights, social and political reform and questions around justice, Jett hopes to contribute towards conversations for affecting change. Having performed at prestigious venues including the renown Carnegie Hall, Jett Kwong is ready for the next installment of her journey.

Musical Journal Entries | Resist EP by Rachel Norman

Soulful Pop Singer Rachel Norman Sparkles on Impressive Debut EP, Resist

Resist EP by Rachel NormanSinger-songwriter Rachel Norman recently released her debut EP Resist, taking listeners on a soaring journey of tightly bound jazz-pop harmonies, synthy string compositions, and layered melodies, all led with soaring vocals. Drawing on a variety of influences, such as Ariana Grande and Overcoats, Norman shines on her debut release with a dynamic, powerful, and irresistible delivery.

Celebrating her college graduation this spring, Norman’s lyrics reflect on her personal life and transition to adulthood, revolving around themes of family, relationships, and the female experience. Self-described as “musical poetic journal entries”, she provides an intimate and personal reflection of emotion and truth. Finding her bearings as a young adult, as well as a musician, Norman hopes others will take inspiration and self-actualization from her work, towards their own creative and artistic pursuits.

Resist is an incredibly personal album that documents moments of tragedies as well as revelation and self-affirmation,” shared Norman. “I wrote the Intro when I was sixteen years old in the wake of my parents divorce. I wanted to include this on the album because it provides context for the duality between abandonment and consolation expressed in later songs, especially ‘Sadness’. Despite life’s hardships, there are many different kinds of love that are eternal! Romantic love is not the only kind that is capable of fulfillment, and we must resist the temptation to place our self worth in the hands of other people. It is engrained in our society for women to define themselves within the context of men, and I hope to subvert that pressure and resist it.”

Ensuring that her writing, production, and release process wouldn’t be rushed, Norman planned the release to coincide with her graduation from Muhlenberg College. Balancing devotion to both her studies and music, she gave time for musical growth, pursuing opportunities and networking through her college community and beyond. “Recording this EP has been a whirlwind, as I’ve traveled far and wide to utilize my resources across the country! Between my New York, Boston, and Washington collaborators, I’ve recorded vocals all over the place.” In a unique and non-traditional process, Norman worked with Executive Producer and Engineer Lukas Selig remotely, using technology and constant communication to share recordings, demos, and notes for development. She also worked with composer/jazz pianist Jason Leonhard, guitarist Kris Wong of the Canvas Collective, producer/engineer Michael Abiuso of Behind the Curtains Media, and producer/DJ CLOCKWORKDJ for input and collaboration across the release. “It’s been interesting to incorporate the perspectives of all of my collaborators, while also staying true to my original views and instincts,” shared Norman. “All of them have different styles and areas of expertise, so I’ve learned so much just by experimentation and stepping out of my comfort zone.” Norman performs on a regular basis at venues throughout NYC, Boston, and PA, and looks forward to expanding her reach this summer.

Resist EP is Available Now on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music!

At the start of her musical and acting career, Rachel Norman delivers a strong debut, with the exciting promise of more to come. A music video for her single “Sadness” will be released in coming weeks, and summer shows will be announced soon.

Featuring string arrangements, full choirs and authentic instruments, the release delivers listeners with a dynamic and dimensional experience. Drawing inspiration from the world of Hollywood, it’s unrealistic expectations and the vices that people use as a form of escapism, Grey hopes that her music will help listeners aim to be the most pure and honest versions of themselves. “There is a lot about living in a pop culture centered world that we deem as ‘normal behavior’. I hope that the music can remind the listener that this follower-centric, alternate persona universe we live in is all temporary happiness,” reveals the songstress who is known for her dynamic glittery performances.

Grey has found success having performed on some of the worlds biggest stages including Ravina (Chicago), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles) and Irving Plaza (New York). Such a Lady! | “Ladylike” by Stevie Rae Stephens

Pop singer/songwriter and former American Idol powerhouse Stevie Rae Stephens recently released her newest single, “Ladylike”

Ladylike by Stevie Rae Stephens

Nashville, TN – With strong lyrics like It’s time we learned how to fight, ’cause lines are blurred and our voices go unheard, I take no pride, ’cause fighting like a lady means fighting for my life, “Ladylike” is sure to become an empowering anthem among Stevie Rae fans.

“The concept of being ladylike is a societal construct that conditions women to be fragile, polite, and restrained,” Stevie Rae explains. “We are taught as children to use our words, avoid conflict, and that commanding, outspoken character traits are less desirable – less ladylike. So what happens when ‘No’ isn’t enough? When our words don’t work? When a lifetime of being ladylike leaves us unprepared to fight back? We have been patient and polite in the face of disrespect long enough. It’s time to reclaim this word and encourage women to be powerful, fierce, and confident.”

“Ladylike” is the second of four singles Stevie Rae will be releasing, preceding three EPs, Ladylike, Daydreams and Cruel Love. These will ultimately make up her upcoming album, Ladylike set to be released in Fall 2019.

Inspired by pop icons like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Sara Bareilles, Stevie Rae also has deep roots in theater and composition. She is currently directing a production of The Vagina Monologues, which will take place on February 17 & 18 at Nashville’s famous Exit/In. Tickets can be purchased HERE.
