what i want music video by alexa ferr

When Adot The God emailed me the beat for what you hear on “What I Want”, I was playing around with melodies and on this particular day, I was feeling like I needed to go after what I want. That, if I’m not happy at the place I’m at now, I need to do what’s best for me to make myself happy and create the life I want for myself. “What I Want” is about empowering others to go after what they believe they deserve and what they want in life. This can be in the form of a better relationship, way of living, career, etc.

Alexa’s career began in 2011 with the release of her first single, “Fell” via Universal Music Group/Dauman Music. The single featured Disney star Matthew “Mdot” Finley, who was also featured in Camp Rock 2. Following the release of “Fell”, Alexa worked with a multitude of producers throughout 2012, including production duo The Invaders who helped the then 17-year-old discover her sound as an artist. In 2013, the Toronto native moved to Los Angeles and released her debut EP ‘Lipstick On The Glass’, introducing fans and media outlets to the “Rugged Pop” sound.

In 2015, Alexa began experimenting with her sound, leaving the “Rugged Pop” sound behind for a sound rooted in Urban Pop. Working with Th3ory of The Penhouse, Alexa wrote and recorded a number of songs including 2016’s “Hit The Switch”, co-written by Travis Bruce. “Hit The Switch” is one of Alexa’s most successful songs with over 30,000 Soundcloud streams to date. Young & Wise | Hopeless Romantics EP by Emmrose

Alt-pop artist Emmrose soars on EP Hopeless Romantics

Debut EP from NYC singer-songwriter reflects on love, heartbreak & overcoming

Hopeless Romantics EP by EmmroseAlt-pop teen artist Emmrose shares her debut EP Hopeless Romantics with the world today. A deeply personal collection of songs reflect on love, heartbreak, and finding your own happiness. Emmrose delivers intense, poetic lyrics and catchy pop melodies, immersing listeners into a deeply emotive world of her own.

Stageright Secrets premiered the release, noting how Emmrose “captures your entire attention and takes you on a warm and mellow ride through life and love, lulling you with a melancholy that one doesn’t expect to hear from an artist this young.” Only sixteen years old, Emmrose opens her heart, embracing intense emotions with honest introspection.

“Don’t let bad people stay in your life,” reflected Emmrose, speaking both on the content of the EP and her own experiences. “It is possible to move on and find happiness. Don’t let the pain of life overcome you and take away your spirit. It’s possible to overcome it. It’s okay to be sad, but just know that this sadness isn’t really ‘you’, and your attachment to people isn’t happy and you can move on.” While much of the material reflects on heartache and heartbreak, the ultimate message is one of hope, and learning how to find a way to move on.

Hopeless Romantics embraces the idea of interwoven emotions, memories, and experiences, acknowledging how they can continue to impact an individual as they try to move forward in finding their own happiness. “The song ‘Takes Me Back’ was written a while after I wrote ‘Five Months’ even though it is heard as an intro to the song,” shared Emmrose. “I thought it fit well since it is the memory of what had taken place in the lyrics of ‘Five Months’. It was a pretty dark time for me, and the audio effects highlight the lyrics so well. I’m really proud of that track.”

Stream Hopeless Romantics EP NOW on Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music!

Much of her lyrical and musical inspiration comes while writing alone at home. “I’ll either play chords that come to me, or a melody that’s been ringing in my head. Sometimes I write down lyrics and then set it to music,” said Emmrose. Over the course of the past year, she recorded Hopeless Romantics, and a surge of new material with producer/engineer Michael Abiuso (Behind the Curtains Media). “I’ve been working with Michael a lot more, and it’s been really exciting,” said Emmrose, reflecting on her growth. “While experimenting with sounds in the studio, we often find ourselves working on individual creations until ready to share, we then combine ideas to make something really great. Mike will often suggest some crazy ideas, like having me pick up and play an accordion, or belt lyrics into the bell of a tuba as a vocal effect. We always find ourselves doing something kooky and fun in the studio.” Their collaborative efforts showcases itself with intricate details on every track, further accenting her soaring vocals.

A junior at LaGuardia High School in New York City, Emmrose admits her mind isn’t always on music – with the pressures of school and college admissions looming over her heard, and the daily interpersonal and social pressures of her age. Her single “Don’t Go” was written as a response to her observance of peers’ mental health struggles including anxiety, depression and suicide. A planned benefit concert for The Imogen Foundation was unfortunately cancelled last week due to COVID-19 concerns, but the message remains the same, of providing a lifeline of communication and positivity for teens. She hopes to re-book a future benefit show in support, and regularly performs throughout NYC.

About Emmrose
With soaring vocals and intricate melodies, you might be surprised to find that singer-songwriter Emmrose is a sixteen year old living in New York City, attending La Guardia High School as a junior. Blending a wide range of pop, indie rock and alternative influences, her sound defies a singular genre, drawing listeners in with poetic lyrics and interwoven harmonies.

Her debut EP Hopeless Romantics was released March 20th, 2020. The title track was released as a single in late 2019, delivering a “stirring sense of destiny” as MP3 Hugger described, making Emmrose an “illustration of a prodigious talent”. As Come Here Floyd commented, “her bold methods of arrangement is indie, modern, nostalgic, and nuanced” making her “captivatingly bright” and a promise of what’s to come.

Bringing It Back | “Calling Your Name” by Steve Ray Ladson

R&B/pop artist Steve Ray Ladson shares emotive, smooth hip-hop single “Calling Your Name”

Calling Your Name by Steve Ray LadonNew York, NY – Steve Ray Ladson shares an emotive new single today titled “Calling Your Name“. Blending R&B, pop and smooth hip hop, he reflects on the universal search for love, and how life as a touring musician can make relationships a struggle. It’s a warm, authentic embrace, that speaks directly to the heart, as a moving and honest reflection. VENTS Magazine premiered the track, saying, “a wonderfully catchy song that captures the 90s, especially the R&B sound of the decade while maintaining it a bit modern.”

Ladson shared how the song came to be. “This song was inspired and created down in Muscle Shoals, Alabama one evening after a recording session at a friend’s home around the table where writing sessions are a norm. I picked up the guitar and began to play and sing, “I’ve had my share of loves ups and downs, I once was lost but now I’m found.” I played the song and sang the lyrics then a good friend of mine, Noah Shell, added to the selection with his touching second verse quoting, “I used to lay awake and wonder, if I’d ever find another.” Realizing that love is universal and is hard to find, especially when you’re a touring musician who spends most of the time on the road traveling.” A multi-instrumentalist and full-time musician, Ladson works as a touring member of the five-time Grammy award-winning Blind Boys Of Alabama, as well as the bassist of Robert Randolph And The Family Band, among projects of his own.

“Calling Your Name” comes as the second single off Ladson’s upcoming album, due out on June 19th. His first single, Do You Know was released last month, along with an accompanying music video. The soulful pop single build an authentic and irresistible feel-good hook, displaying Ladson’s masterful vocal performance and musicianship. “I want people to hear my music and say, it’s authentic and that’s the way music should be,” reflected Ladson. “Remind them of how it used to be and the way it used to sound. Bring back what could feel and when love and music was real. That’s my goal to bring back the real feel.” With COVID-19 bringing the world to a halt, it’s a time more than ever where the world needs feel-good music, and Ladson’s tunes deliver.

Playing over six instruments, and always striving to expand his talents, Ladson continues to dream big. He has previously been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards and has worked/toured with numerous artists including Alan ParsonsVince GillZZ Top, Icelandic band Kaleo, and Mavis Staples. Paying Respect with Soul | “You Know What It Do” by José James

José James Shares Playful Single “You Know What It Do”, No Beginning No End 2 Album Out March 6
World Tour Begins This Month!

You Know What It Do by Jose James

With a beguiling mix of jazz, R&B, pop and soul, singer-songwriter and producer José James shares a playful new single today, “You Know What It Do.” His homage to Prince and the Minneapolis Funk sound he grew up with in the 80s, the track is from his newly announced future soul album, No Beginning No End 2. Coming out March 6 on his own label Rainbow Blonde Records, the record also features the talents of Aloe Blacc (from previous single “Turn Me Up”), Ledisi & Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (from first single “I Need Your Love”), Laura Mvula, Lizz Wright, Erik Truffaz, Hindi Zahra, Taali and more. James is celebrating the release with an international tour this year, as well – tour dates below.

Stream “You Know What It Do” HERE!

José James spent a decade reshaping jazz with the genre-blurring verve of a crate-digging beat guru, before becoming a solo R&B star. In the last couple of years he lived in Bill Withers’ shoes — recording and touring his legendary songbook for the Lean On Me project. Now, the satin-voiced songwriter’s latest is No Beginning No End 2, a sequel to his 2013 album that resurrects the bold eclecticism audiences first fell in love with. After the Bill Withers tour, James recalls:

I wrote a thing on Instagram saying I was thinking about No Beginning No End 2 and people went insane. They wrote thousands of comments about how the first one changed their life. I don’t sit around and think ‘my work is so important’ so that was kinda nice.

Things are a little different this time around. For one, while the prequel was James’ Blue Note debut, this is his first set of new music for his own label/collective Rainbow Blonde Records. Secondly, the album is full of collaborators who are auteurs in their own right: Laura Mvula, Aloe Blacc, Ledisi, Lizz Wright, Erik Truffaz, and Hindi Zahra, to name a few. Thirdly, with the backing of a wildly talented band held down by rhythm sections in Los Angeles and Brooklyn (befitting Rainbow Blonde’s bicoastal status), the songs are warmer and more defined than ever.

Singer-songwriter, producer, Jose James

For James, all of these pieces are related, and speak to a constellation of small but vibrant artist communities in constant communication. “We’re trying to connect the dots on a global level and that’s sort of the whole concept: no beginning, no end, no boundaries,” he said. This extends to his partner in business, songwriting and life, Rainbow Blonde co-founder/artist Taali. James explains: “With Taali, I feel really seen for the first time and that’s powerful. I think that’s what we’re all striving for on an individual and cultural level.”

James goes on to say, “I read an interview with Billie Eilish where she was talking about, ‘I can’t believe people used to think genres existed,'” he laughs. “It’s like, oh man, that’s just so nice. It was such a struggle for my generation, and others before, to kick these doors down of this genre and that, and it’s so beautiful to know there are kids who can’t even think that way.”

Naturally, NBNE2’s players are of a similar philosophical mindset, including: Brett Williams, Kris Bowers, and Takeshi Ohbayashi on keys; Marcus Machado, Alan Hampton, and LP co-producer Brian Bender on guitar; Ben Williams on bass; and Justin Brown and Jamire Williams on drums. James also enlisted Alberto Lopez (of Quetzal) for the sort of Afro-Latin percussion common to so much black music of that era, from Marvin Gaye to Gloria Gaynor — which befits James’ own Angolan-Panamanian roots.

Following the release of her lead single “We Don’t Funk”, the EP offers a healthy dose of 70s nostalgia blended seamlessly with the bold female empowerment themes of the new century that especially speak to women of color.

As much as I want all women to love this music, I need women of color to hear it and know certain narratives about us are simply not true… It’s what soul music sounds like when a woman falls in love and doesn’t give up her power. – KIRBY
