Fresh off the release of his fire new project Trappy Gilmore, Sacramento-raised, Seattle-based hip hop artist Macntaj returns with the official music video for his single “Live Enough.” Filmed in Mumbia, India while recently on tour, Live Enough is a standout music video of 2019 based on its location alone, but producer Michaelangelo takes things even further with aggressive and hard-hitting production. With a repetitive, yet catchy, looping melody playing in the background, Macntaj absolutely spazzes on “Live Enough.” with enough energy to feel through the speakers. Venturing through the city Macntajexperiences India’s culture first hand while blessing the locals with a taste of his own art. Making waves with his recent release Trappy GilmoreMacntaj is most definitely a breakout artist to watch for in the new year from Seattle’s world-famous music scene. Unsigned Only Music Competition Launches Special “Video Only” Promotion

The Unsigned Only Music Competition is launching a special “Video Only” promotion and will be accepting both professional and homemade music video entries from March 20-29, 2019. Original music and cover songs are eligible. Artists can enter by going to: www.unsignedonly.com.

This is an opportunity for artists to show their creative side by putting their video making skills to the test, whether it be a professionally produced video or a homemade video that can be shot on just an iPhone or video camera. Two videos will become winners: one that is a fully produced video and one that is a homemade video. The two winners will be awarded some cool prizes, including a one-year license to Filmora9 and a GoPro camera. All “Video Only” entrants will receive a free a 30-day free trial of Filmora9, a leading video editing software program that makes future music video editing as easy as ever.

“Music videos are just as important as they have ever been,” said Candace Avery and Jim Morgan, Co-Founders of Unsigned Only. “Sites such as YouTube and Vimeo make it easy to post a video, but many of these indie videos don’t get many viewers. We want to help indie artists gain viewers and real recognition, and we are looking forward to receiving some really creative, interesting videos.”

It’s very simple to participate. Artists just need to make a music video (or choose one that has already been created) and upload it to YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, or any other website or platform where Unsigned Only can go and view it. Then, upon entering online, artists will provide a streaming link to the video.

All “Video Only” entries will also be entered into the overall 2019 Unsigned Only Music Competition and be eligible for all the regular competition prizes. Unsigned Only is open to all artists who are unsigned to a major record label and awards more than $150,000 in cash and prizes split among 38 winners, including a $20,000 cash prize to the overall Grand Prize winner. The Grand Prize winner is also awarded one-on-one mentoring by an elite group of record company executives. This is a unique opportunity for an artist to directly network with the highest level of record company professionals and get guidance, advice, and feedback. First Place and Second Place winners will also be selected in each category and awarded prizes. Since its inception in 2012, five Grand Prize winners have been signed to record label deals.

Tobi's new music monster

Maiah Manser See Thru It Artist: Maiah Manser
Track: “See Thru It”
LA-based noir-pop songstress Maiah Manser delivers an inspired pop paradox of soulful voice and lyric, juxtaposed by robo-cool beat and synth, with new single, “See Thru It”.

Willfully stunted synth stab and stop/start rhythm break ‘n’ bolt the 2-minute fifty-six-second track in dysfunctionally funky grid-snapped stanzas. Phat monophonic deconstructed electro-tones swagger awesome and obnoxious, while lo-fi sonics oscillate and fizz left/right. Manser’s vocals work the percussive with great success. Her stand out voice intentionally and rudely warped by sudden heavy pitch shift and shunt.

An intelligent slice of smartly crafted post-modern pop, as abrasive as it is audacious, “See Thru It” is out now on all major platforms.

Elephanz ImperfectionArtist: Elephanz
Track: “Imperfection”
French electro-pop duo Elephanz drops a super-cool dose of electronic groove and old school soul with new single, “Imperfection”.

Crafted in understated high fidelity and deceptively unassuming quality production, the three-minute twenty-second track arrives in tightly timed beat and accomplished arrangement. Deft use of instrumentation makes for rich and compelling listening experience, with individual element carefully selected for both their musical and sonic characteristic. Lyrics are delivered in a light flourish and phrase; Elephanz working seamlessly from French to English and back again.

A smartly finessed pop gem, “Imperfection” is available now across streaming media platforms.

computer magic remixes - BRASH! Magazine BlogArtist: Computer Magic + Futurecop!
Track: “Perfect Game” (Futurecop! Remix)
British composer Manzur Iqbal aka ‘Futurecop!’ brings a neo-synth-sonic space adventure to New York-based artist and producer Danz’s Computer Magic release, “Perfect Game”.

Framed in glorious fizzing electronics and lush 80s reverb, the 4-minute twenty-eight-second track unfolds in graceful overlapping melodies of burning electrodes and modulated sustain; contrasted by funky blunt 8-bit sequencer stabs. Gated Linndrum style beats punch/drive and exploded in bubble-pop fills. Danielle Johnson’s (Danz) vocals echo sweetly in tastefully constructed ambiance. Her voice a perfect pop blend of brittle phrasing and uber cool nonchalance.

“Perfect Game” (Futurecop! Remix)’ is available now as one of five ‘Perfect Game’ remixes, presented together in the EP, ‘ Remixes, Vol 1’.

Live in Hip-Hop | “Shake Those Hips” by The Urban Renewal Project

16-Piece Hip Hop Band, The Urban Renewal Project, Releases New Single, “Shake Those Hips”

Shake Those Hips by The Urban Renewal Project

The sixteen-piece collective known as The Urban Renewal Project is back and doubling down on the live-band hiphop aesthetic that has set them apart from their jazz-funk and fusion contemporaries.

“Shake Those Hips”, is from their forthcoming EP titled Love Glory Duty Death, expected later in 2019. The track is a bleacher-stomping, HoCo dance party, brimming with pep band vibes, bouncing sousaphone lines and an throwback sound reminiscent of The Pharcyde and Outkast. Rappers Slim da Reazon, Elmer Demond & Dustin Morgan are leading the squad and want you to show off your moves, so listen up and get ready to get down with The URP.

“Shake Those Hips” is Available Now on iTunes & Spotify!

Between coast-to-coast tour dates with rap legends Camp Lo and a transpacific festival appearance in Jakarta, Indonesia last year, the Los Angeles-based group has found time to record new material that explores an updated version of the Golden Era hiphop sound—infectious rap hooks, concentrated horn lines and a heavy dose of live drums—creating positive vibes just begging to be danced to.

The Urban Renewal Project - BRASH! Magazine Blog

Long-time collaborator Elmer Demond and his laid-back flows are joined by the manic and unpredictable newcomer Slim da Reazon, as well as the band’s once-and-future bassist Dustin Morgan, a.k.a. Yung Jinja, now rocking the mic. The trio rhyme over instrumental grooves devised by bandleader R.W. Enoch and the group’s 13 instrumentalists while Alex Nester provides effortless soul, pop and funk vocals to complete the ensemble.

Julia Zahra was born in 1995 in Indianapolis, US as Julia van der Toorn, and was raised in The Netherlands.

In 2013 she auditioned in the fourth season of The Voice of Holland with an accoustic guitar version of Britney Spears’ ‘Oops I Did It Again’ (over 6 million streams on Spotify). From that first moment on she was one of the favourites and gained popularity, and won the competition at only 18 years old – the youngest winner thus far. After that she released her debut album.

A year later Julia participated in ‘The Best Singers of The Netherlands’, a Dutch TV competition in which artists perform cover versions of each other’s songs, and won this show as well. In one episode she sang ‘Just an Illusion’ which ended up high in the Dutch iTunes charts in 2015. More than a year later the song was picked up in Fiji, where it still is a top ten song, and eventually all around The Pacific, Australia and New Zealand. In January 2018 Julia released her EP Something New, which is a raw and acoustic interpretation of her songs. Currently she is performing live in The Netherlands with her almost sold out The Remedy Tour, and is ready to overwhelm everybody with a new sound and a lot of new tunes.

Classic Covers | “Careless Whisper” by George Michael

Taken By Trees Shares Cover of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” w/ Billboard

Swedish dream pop act Taken By Trees just released an entrancing cover of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” with Billboard. Produced by Dan Lissvikk (of Swedish dance-rockers Studio) with Mr Little Jeans on backing vocals, frontwoman Victoria Bergsman explains why she chose the song: “‘Careless Whisper’ came to mind around the time when George Michael passed away. I wanted to make a tribute to him, a thank you for all his amazing music his made. The whole song was really hard for me to sing, my range is not that wide…I have always felt that George Michael or Wham! would sound amazing in a Balearic production. My version is leaning into that Balearic style with an added Cumbia rhythm for a laid back groove.”

Stream “Careless Whisper” Now on Spotify!

Taken By Trees recently released their 4th full length LP Yellow To Blue, a playful and hopeful ten-track collection that explores the pop genre to its fullest, eliciting the help of Jesse Shatkins’ A-list calibre (Sia, Rihanna) and co-writers Ariel Rechtshaid (Haim, Adele), Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend) and Daniel Nigro (Empress Of, Carly Rae Jepsen). Bergsman, formerly of The Concretes, has been featured on Peter, Bjorn and John’s global hit “Young Folks”, which garnered over 115 million streams on Spotify and has appeared on multiple late night TV shows such as Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien. Taken By Trees’ crisp sun-soaked driving rhythms, gritty bass, and lush hi-fi mixes have garnered over 30 million streams since 2015.

Week36 |Tobi’s New Music Monster Picks

New Music Monster

Music Reviews written by Tobi Davis

Tobi's new music monster

caroline by IndianaArtist: Indiana
Track: “Caroline”
UK-based Independent Artist and superstar in waiting, Indiana delivers a sultry cool slice of synthpop sizzle and stand out songcraft with new single, “Caroline”.

Having parted company with Sony in search of artistic freedom, self-confessed narcissist Indiana has thrown herself into the life of an Independent Artist, making music and music video alike with a pronounced single-mindedness and single focus, to work her own way back to the top of the charts on her own terms.

Latest single, ‘“Caroline” represents Indiana’s first new material of 2019. Framed by glorious synth sonics and fizzing ever-shifting ambient drenched in delay, modulation, and sweet saturation, the 3 minutes 34 seconds track hustles to a bit snipped hi-hat and Linndrum dry kick snare/kick snare. Well placed stutter and glitch adds further syncopation and excitement, as Indiana’s soulful pop vocals soar. The talented vocalist working an impressive range from rich soulful tones to breathy and brittle pop laments.

Impressive production enhances the emotional dynamic with smart use of arrangement and FX, opening up and closing down the track in an ever-changing phonic dynamic. Vocals FXs are applied with taste, as imaginative use of pitch, synth, and echo create harmony, double and foreshadow. For all its qualities, it is the elegance and integrity of Indiana's songwriting that stands “Caroline” apart from the weekly slew of dance-pop offerings. Where her contemporaries so often fall short, Indiana excels. Reminiscent of the great pop songs of the 80s, “Caroline” tells a cautionary tale by successfully pairing compelling melody, both mournful and engaging, with lyric rich in image and idea. The result is nothing short of a modern pop classic, quietly operatic and softly spoken poetic.

With a backlog of material to release and a highly active presence on social media, Indiana looks set to take 2019, and take it, very much on her own terms. Without access to mainstream distribution channels afforded to major label artists, Indiana will have to move the mountain to her by sheer force of will and talent. Fortunately for fans of her music, she’s not lacking for either.

Hindsight 20 20 by UPSAHLArtist: UPSAHL
Track: “All My Friends are Rich” (Hindsight 20/20 EP)
Indie pop rising star UPSAHL releases her debut EP, ‘Hindsight 20/20’; rich in soul, swagger, sarcasm, and the sardonic, typified by the opening track, “All My Friends are Rich”.

Having only released her debut single, “Can You Hear Me Know” in 2018, UPSAHL has enjoyed a rapid rise to the impressive heights of placements on both Spotify and Filtr playlists, the attention of tastemaker publications, Consequence of Sound, Indie Shuffle and Ones to Watch, and #1 on the Hype Machine Charts. The young artist’s follow up singles, ‘Kiss Me Now’ and ‘Rough’ were produced by Max Frost and Tim Pagnotta & Brian Phillips respectively.

Drawing upon an eclectic range of genres, ‘Hindsight 20/20’ features a dazzling range of musical influences and delights for the listener. Each one successfully and seamlessly blended together across the five track EP. While Indie Pop remains the constant at the heart of each song, in turn, each one arrives, with its own unique flavor; the second track, ‘Stressed’ explodes into life with a sumptuous and swanky eruption of brass, the following track, ‘Drugs’ trading on Enimen-style loop ‘n’ sample.

Quirky and insightful, odd and ill-tempered, UPSAHL’s inspired use of lyrics catches and engages the ear from the get-go. Her singular use of phrase and expression, both familiar and, paradoxically, alienating at the same time. A refreshingly honest degree of obnoxiousness is present throughout; although UPSAHL has no interest or need to appear anything like ‘perfect’ in our eyes. Her vocal delivery works the beats well, moving from strut to rush with effective ease.

An intoxicating mix of smartly produced, creative instrumentation and arrangement, coupled with UPSAHL’s uniquely compelling songwriting makes for a highly enjoyable and original debut EP. Hindsight 20/20 exceeds the considerable expectations upon its creator’s young shoulders.

Catch the new video for ‘Drugs’.

beverly hills by madgeArtist: Madge
Track: “Beverly Hills”
DIY pop producer Madge drops glorious electro on the most excellent lo-fi with her stand out rendition of Weezer’s 2005 smash hit, “Beverly Hills”.

Born and raised in Utah, now based in LA, Madge’s 2018 debut was an inspired cover of Sum 41’s ‘In Too Deep’. The MTV-friendly indie rock bop cast anew as a melancholic oddity of drawn-out guitar riff, willfully unrefined saw wave, and deconstructed drum machine fill. Madge managing to find depths in a track few had any idea existed.

2019 and Madge makes a welcome return to the art of the cover song with Weezer’s Grammy-winning MTV rotation all-conquering mega-smash, “Beverly Hills”.

Stripped down beat, bit and stab and chunky, cumbersome monolithic synth bass spit and grind; Madge tackling the opening verse in hushed rushes of double-tracked whispers, opening up to wonderful indie talk vox through the chorus. Sonic strangeness floats in the ambiance; modulating, escalating, auto-saturated, sequence and synth fizz, ripple, and squish. The track building in uneven lunges and bursts.

Stubbornly alternative and bold testament to the underproduced, untidy, wonder of the home brewed and truly independent, Madge’s reimagining of Weezer’s “Beverly Hills” will delight and dismay in equal measure. Refreshingly unapologetic in its intentions, the track is by no means for everyone; nor is it meant to be. Clearly indifferent to indifference, Madge is making music for you to love or for you to hate. A compulsion shared by all genuine Artists.
