Getting It Right | “Better Man” by Justing Kemp Band

Justin Kemp Band Set to Release New Single Produced by Bill McDermott, “Better Man” on Nov. 16th

“Better Man” was written with the hope to inspire people to strive to be the best they can in any given relationship. May it be with a spouse, a parent, a child, a sibling, a friend, or even with God. We all make mistakes, and I think we all hope those we hold dear can and will give us that second chance to be better.

About Justin Kemp Band
Justin grew up in the small New Mexico town of Hobbs listening to his dad sing and play country music and watching him play bass, acoustic guitar, and piano in church on Sunday mornings. He was also heavily influenced by his very supportive aunt and uncle, Sherman and Tammy Aten of Aten Ministries, who are very successful evangelical musicians. Justin was constantly exposed to the sounds of Merle Haggard, George Jones, Keith Whitley, George Strait, Brooks and Dunn, Garth Brooks, and all the greats of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s country music scene. By the age of 11, Justin could often be found in his room with his dad’s acoustic guitar learning to play and switch between the basic chords. He was fascinated with the instrument, and for Christmas that year, Santa delivered Justin his first acoustic guitar. His parents often joke that he picked it up and has yet to put it down.

Justin began writing his own songs in high school. At first, he wasn’t too keen on the idea of singing in front of others; but once he allowed himself to be heard, his unique, powerful voice easily captivated all who listened. After high school, he worked briefly for a local surveying company all the while knowing in his heart that music was his passion. After a couple of years, his younger brother graduated high school and decided to go to South Plains College in Levelland, TX. With encouragement from his family to chase his dreams while he was young, Justin enrolled in the Commercial Music program at SPC.

It didn’t take long for Justin’s parents to begin receiving reassurance from the music staff at SPC that Justin should pursue a career as an entertainer. Justin thrived in the school’s ensembles and quickly got his first solo acoustic gig at a coffee shop in Lubbock playing for tips. He met some other student musicians, and along with is dad, David, formed the Justin Kemp Band to play his first paying gig for his cousin’s Quinceanera in Lovington, NM. It didn’t take long for word to get out and Justin Kemp Band was playing somewhere every weekend in Lubbock, Hobbs, and the surrounding areas, and over the next year, JKB began traveling all over Texas and Southeastern New Mexico.

Justin’s twin brother Cody and younger brother Cameron both help with promoting the band and selling merchandise. Cameron majored in Music Business at SPC and hopes to take over the management of the band from David in the future. Justin’s mom, Marla, plays a key role in promoting the band and keeping up with social media, marketing, designing desirable merchandise, and keeping the boys in line. JKB, which quickly grew into Kempire Productions, LLC, is a family business that is grounded in the Kemp’s Christian faith and a strong “family first” conviction. Justin has often said that he doesn’t care if he ever becomes rich or famous; as long as he’s making a living, having fun, and doing what he loves with who he loves, that’s all that matters.

Toulouse by Neon Ctities - BRASH! Magazine BlogDenver duo Neon Cities self-releases a first music video for their new single “Toulouse” following the success of their In Waves EP, which has to date accumulated over a half million streams on Spotify since July. Toulouse is a instrumental chillwave composition in the vein of Com Truise, Sun Glitters, or Washed Out for all those folks reaching for warm memories of summer, conjuring up the south of France. The title comes from Neon Cities’ Chase, who developed the original song concept on a day off in the city of Toulouse while touring with downtempo and ambient artist Tycho.

Denver electronic duo Neon CitiesIf “Toulouse” is a sun bleached visit to the South of France, the B Side, Storm on the Isle is it’s dark side, a sprawling, moody, ambient excursion in a rain soaked isle off of Scotland in mid-October. Those familiar with Neon Cities’ prior releases will recognize the 80’s soundtrack aesthetic from Arcade Dreamer, the closing track from their debut Tessier-Ashpool EP. Storm on the Isle is marked by its vintage analog synths pulses and drones, creating a longing atmosphere that would not be out of place in the soundtrack for Netflix’s Stranger Things.

From Charlie with Love | “Find Someone Who Cares” by Charlie Hole

Singer/Songwriter, Charlie Hole, Releases “Find Someone Who Cares” from Forthcoming Album, Beautiful Decay

Find Someone Who Cares by Charlie Hole - BRASH! Magazine BlogCharlie Hole is one of the most exciting young singer-songwriters around nowadays. On “Find Someone Who Cares”, the fourth single from his upcoming album Beautiful Decay, his carefully crafted music combines Acoustic and Folk elements in such elegant manner. It is a splendid piano-ballad reminding us of Elton John glory days with modern Matt Simons, James Bay and John Mayer influences.

Charlie about his new single:
“I wrote Find Someone Who Cares for my Dad’s wedding after he asked me if I could sing a song during the ceremony.

I was struggling to come up with anything because I wanted to get the moment just right and I had never written a pure love song before.

Eventually I found the melody from an old discarded song I had lying around, with the chorus essentially intact and I loved the sentiment of finding something and holding on to it. I rewrote the verses around some romantic imagery and phrased the lines as questions, more like traditional wedding vows couples get asked at ceremonies… like ‘will you take thee to be your lawful wedded wife etc…’ but made them more personal like ‘will you hold me in the silence of the moon as it’s dancing in your eyes?’… as soon as I had rephrased the lines as questions the song somehow worked, and I knew I had what I wanted.

I played it to my producer, Jim Cregan, to see what he thought. I played everything I ever wrote to him and I think this was the only time I ever made him cry with a song, so I knew I had a good one.

I played it during the wedding ceremony for my Dad and his wife, Sarah, and they both cried too, and to this day I still think it’s the best song on the album because I wasn’t trying to do anything clever or different with it, I just let it be what it is, a nice, honest love song.”
