Drink 2 U by Kate Lomas - BRASH! Magazine BlogArtist: Kate Lomas
Track: “Drink 2 U”
All singing, all dancing, singer/songwriter/producer Kate Lomas, whips up a neo synth pop infused, beat bounced, electro-tastic slice of homemade dance-pop, with new single, “Drink 2 U”. Following up on the critically acclaimed, “Sweet Strange Days” (currently playing at an H&M near you), the UK based independent producer / artist has crafted an ‘ear catching’, playlist friendly, and yet, strikingly graceful, pop song. Huge, expansive synth pads open up the track in great waves of fizzing, ’80s evocative’ energy, and in melancholic contrast to the tight, electro piano dabs, well timed vox FXs and functional bit beat. Kate’s voice bubbles along with an accented edge of cynicism; lyric and tone modulating between ‘world weary’ and ‘world wonder’. The pleasingly straightforward economy of arrangement and instrumentation, deftly wrapped in well judged use of reverb, panning and stereo space, makes for an effortless and engaging listening experience. Having already attracted the support of BBC Radio 2’s Zoe Ball, and assorted Indie press, Kate Lomas is shaping up to be an impressive and inspirational standard-bearer for independent producers across the indie-sphere, hoping to make progress in this new, streaming media dominated market.

Spun by Sextile - BRASH! Magazine BlogArtist: Sextile
Track: “Spun “
The second release taken from their upcoming EP, 3 (out September 14), LA based neo-punk/electro-corrupted awesome noise machine, Sextile drop their latest dash of sonic, genre-blended, homebrewed, albeit music, new single, “Spun “. A noisy, guitar grinded, distortion fest of clattering six strings and feedback crescendos. The west coast recorded track, sweats New York influence with Sonic Youth styled percussive stabs, atonal slews & slurs, gloriously blunted Velvet-Underground-esque guitar breaks, and uber-cool, Ramonal shouty shouty vocals. The roomy, trashy, orgy of garaged saturation is bound together, rhythmic and punchy by Linn Drum beat. With the band’s electronic toys sat quietly, and intentionally, on the back burner, “Spun “ stands and sounds, in stark contrast to 80s sequencer driven, synth-wave-tastic, first release, ‘Paradox’ ; the two singles demonstrating the great width and depth of Sextile’s loud, explosive, musical jamboree. It’s in your face, and in the best possible, bad taste. It’s waking up your neighbours and the sound of the police. Rocks broken in the hot sun and who gives a sh*t who won. It’s Sextile.

Shelter by Joe Sims - BRASH! Magazine BlogArtist: Joe Sims
Track: “Shelter”
Independent singer songwriter Joe Sims adds to his impressive tally of releases this year, with his eighth single of 2018, the tender love song, “Shelter”. Tastefully ‘underdriven’ by an arpeggio acoustic guitar, paired well to Joe’s gently laid back vocals, the song has a dulcet, quietly engaging tone, that evokes a longing sense of nostalgia. The warm, ‘low mid’ and ‘hands off’ feel of the mix, without clever trick or FX, adds to the straightforward listening experience; creating the impression of an honest relationship between that of listener and performer. Additional instrumentation arrives as the song progresses, with bass, drums and percussion, swinging and swaying the song through chorus, into second verse and beyond; a well judged electric guitar solo adding a touch of ear candy and fizz. For fans of vinyl recordings, the good old ‘down the middle’ timbre of the track will feel like coming home. Very much a songwriter in the great American tradition, Joe Sims is crafting an impressive catalogue of well written, intuitively arranged material ; that demonstrates both creative integrity and good taste.
